HATFIELD boxing star Jamie McDonnell was today looking forward to a fortnight’s holiday in Mexico after retaining his Commonwealth title with ease last weekend, writes Peter Catt.
But the 25-year-old bantamweight champion will not be overdoing the chili con carne while he is there.
McDonnell could be back in the ring in September for a televised showdown with unbeaten British champion Stuey Hall and he said: “I’ll be taking my running shoes with me and watching what I eat while I’m away.”
He added: “I got in great shape for last week’s fight and I’ll need to be the same if I’m fighting Hall next.”
Sky TV are eager to get the fight on and promoter Frank Maloney reckons the interest in the bout could rival that of the recent domestic clash between George Groves and James De Gale.
But McDonnell is adamant he wants the fight to be in Doncaster.
He said: “The money has to be right but they can offer what they like to take it elsewhere. I want my next fight at home.”
