Hockey: Westwoodside teenager Daniel West makes his mark for Great Britain

The 18-year-old, from Westwoodside, is not only off to Loughborough University - like fellow Doncaster Hockey Club graduate Middleton.

But he also took another big step towards a full international call-up by helping Great Britain U21s win the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia last weekend.

West was on the scoresheet in a 3-2 win over India in the final, pouncing from close range after seven minutes before a brace from James Oates ultimately sealed victory.

He also found the net in a 5-1 pool victory over Malaysia. Further wins over New Zealand and India, and a draw with Australia, sealed GB's spot in the final.

West was selected for the prestigious tournament following three weeks of assessment camps in September.

He has also been chosen for the GB Elite Development Programme for the coming year - a shadow squad from which players are selected for the full squad.  

West followed his eldest brother Ben into the first team at Doncaster and his younger brother Ewan also plays for the Town Fields club.

He played for Doncaster from the age of five up until the end of last season after completing his A levels at Worksop College and will now take his place at Loughborough University.

Middleton, 34, went on to become the most capped English player of all time. He played his 400th international match for England and Great Britain last December.

n Doncaster are still to get off the mark in the men's Conference North after Leeds battled back to win 3-1 at Town Fields.

The home side took the lead early in the second half through a Matt Gibson short corner but some clinical finishing from Leeds turned the game on its head and left Doncaster without a point from their opening three games.

Doncaster's ladies came from a goal down at Sheffield Hallam to win 3-1 courtesy of strikes from Camryn Dias (2) and Bexx Woods.

They sit fifth in the Northern Premier Division with two wins and two defeats from their opening four games.
