The younger age groups outshone the seniors in many events at the Yorkshire Championships at Cudworth.
Hallamshire’s Tilly Simpson recorded a magnificent middle distance double in the under-15 age group. Simpson spread-eagled the field in both the 1500 metres on the first day when she clocked 4:28.34 and in the 800 metres on the second day. In the shorter race she did 2:07.33 in a solo run which put her fourth on the UK all time list for her age group. It was more than a second quicker than Wakefield runner Sally Smith’s time in winning the senior title. Both were championship records by a wide margin beating her own records.
Kristie Edwards (City of Sheffield) retained both her 100 metres (11.85) and 200 metres (24.82) beating the senior times in both races.
In windy conditions Daniel Gardiner (City of Sheffield) won the long jump with a best effort of 7.70 whilst Sheffield decathlete John Lane won the discus with 40.03
In the junior (u20) age group Joe Lancaster (City of Sheffield) produced a powerful finish to take the 400 metres title clocking 50.08 but there was a rare defeat for Adam Hague who failed to clear his opening height in the pole vault, the title going to his Sheffield team mate George Heppinstall with a 4.20 clearance.
Rotherham’s Leo Rowley set a championship best in the u17 shot with 15.57 and made it a double winning the discus with 35.98.
There was also a record for Barnsley’sToni Buckingham in the u20 women’s shot with a throw of 12.97.
