A trio of Doncaster sumo wrestlers have pushed themselves to the very top of the British pecking order.
Father and son duo Mike and Brad Robinson, from Edenthorpe, and Jason Moran, from Scawsby, recently competed at the 2014 ESU European Championships.
And their performance in Bulgaria has been described as the “best ever” from a British team by proud coach Steve Pateman.
Silver medallist Brad, 20, shone in the Under 21s category, beaten in the final by the reigning champion from host nation Bulgaria.
Brad, Mike, 46, and Jason, 26, all gave as good as they got in the men’s events but lost out to the eventual finalists.
While in a competitive team event, the Doncaster fighters battled their way through to a bronze medal play-off only to be downed by the well-fancied Hungarians.
Pateman, who is also president of the European Sumo Union, said: “I am so proud of the guys. This was probably the best performance from a British team ever.
“We have to remember that these guys have been competing for less than two years.
“We also have no funding in the UK, so it all comes out of their own pockets or sponsors.
“Most of the other teams start some form of wrestling when they are four or five, it’s almost in their DNA, and they have funding to support them.
“Brad’s silver in the Under 21s equals his performance last year and is exceptional,” he added.
“All the senior event losses were against far more experienced athletes that have all won European and World medals, but they were all that close that on another day each one could have easily gone our way.”
Mike and Brad are expected to represent Great Britain in the World Championships in Taiwan in August.
