Doncaster's Mason Yarrow to represent GB Taekwondo at Youth Olympic Games

The 17-year-old, from Dunscroft, has enjoyed a memorable 2018 after representing Great Britain at senior level for the first time earlier this year.

The former Hungerhill School pupil will gain more invaluable international experience at the Games in Buenos Aires from October 6-18.

Yarrow is one of Britain's three Taekwondo representatives alongside Huddersfield's Aaliyah Powell and Southampton's Sharissa Gannaway.

The Youth Olympics first catapulted world number one Jade Jones to international stardom eight years ago.

'It still hasn't sunk in,' said Yarrow, a member of Ultimate Taekwondo club.

'I'm so happy and can't wait to experience and represent my country in such a massive event as the Youth Olympics.

'It's my dream come true too.'

Yarrow is no stranger to international competition and represented Great Britain at the 2015 Cadet World Championships in South Korea, winning a bronze medal.

His excellent progress this year saw him included in GB Taekwondo's senior European Championship squad, fighting at -54kg.

Despite an early exit, he acquitted himself well against Russian Magomed Gagiev who went on to win a silver medal.

Yarrow also fought at the 2018 Junior World Championships and also won gold as a junior at the recent Luxembourg Open.

Steve Green, GB Taekwondo's development manager, said: 'I am absolutely delighted for Mason.

'I am convinced that this will prove to be a pivotal moment in his career. 

'There is no doubt that this is the biggest and most prestigious event and will give Mason the chance to experience competing in a multi-sport environment for the first time.'

The athletes will be joined by 62 athlete role models in Argentina - including double Olympic champion Jones - whose primary function will be to support, advise and inspire the young athletes.

Buenos Aires beat off competition from Medellin in Colombia and Glasgow to win the Games which also feature karate and judo, as well as dancesport, futsal, roller speed skating and sport climbing.
