Kid Galahad’s British super bantamweight title will be on the line in February – but it will not be the Upperthorpe fighter defending it.
The Star understands Galahad – real name Barry Awad – will vacate the British and Commonwealth crowns in order to chase European title glory in early 2014.
And Doncaster’s Gavin McDonnell is close to being confirmed for a shot at the vacant title as early as February.
McDonnell – twin brother of former IBF world bantamweight champion Jamie – defeated Barnsley’s Josh Wale in a British title final eliminator in September to become mandatory contender.
Like his brother, 27-year-old McDonnell has agreed terms with Matchroom Boxing, though a deal has yet to be announced.
Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn has lined up a title contest for the Dunscroft fighter in Hull on February 22.
The Ingle stable may be losing a British champion with Galahad’s relinquishing but are hoping it will not be for long having put forward undefeated Leigh Wood to face McDonnell.
