Danum Eagles more than held their own against Division One side Bradford Dragons but went down 89-81 in the National Cup.
Eagles’ Mathew Martin led all scorers with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while new signing Oliver Hylands impressed with 23 points, 16 rebounds and five assists.
Martin exploded into life in the second quarter but could not prevent the Dragons racing into a 53-34 lead at the half way stage. Former Doncaster Panther Jason Swaine found his range and connected on several three point efforts for Bradford.
The third quarter began with a flurry of scoring from the resurgent Eagles, with a 22-9 run forcing the visitors into a timeout.
But a cagey fourth quarter saw both teams trade scores with the Dragons unable to pull away and the Eagles unable to close the gap.
Eagles go to Sheffield Hallam Sharks in the National Shield on Saturday.
