Holymoorside Crown Green Bowling Club’s policy to attract new bowlers came of age when one of its young graduates won a trophy.
James Nugent, partnered by Barry Graves, reached the final of the Wilsunday Cup for pairs at the Holymoor Road club and defeated two of the club’s best bowlers to win the trophy.
The Holymoorside club has worked hard at introducing new players to the game and James was introduced to crown green bowling last year.
This summer, two parties of young bowlers from Holymoorside and Walton Primary School enjoyed an afternoon of basic skills training and taster sessions.
Students from Brookfield Community School also took advantage of the club’s offer to introduce bowling to young people.
Holymoorside boasts five qualified Level 1 coaches – chairman Ernie Barnes, Val Johnson, Jean and John Pratt and Ann Welton – who compete in the Chesterfield and District League players.
Last month, the coaching team welcomed 16 older people to an introductory course for those new to the game and a number have already applied for membership.
It is hoped that similar introductory course will be run next year.
