Hockey: Epworth struggle in league opener with Thirsk

Epworth Ladies Hockey Club did not quite get off to the start they were looking for in their newly-promoted season.

Facing new competition in Yorkshire Four, following back-to-back promotions, it was a familiar side that lined-up against Epworth for their season curtain-raiser as they welcomed Thirsk Seconds to their home turf.

Thirsk had been the side that secured last season’s top spot in Yorkshire Five as Epworth finished runners-up, with the pair both winning promotion.

And it was not the start they wanted on Saturday as they eventually succumbed to a 6-2 defeat by their North Yorkshire visitors.

Helen Lightburn and Jen Owen netted for Epworth who were 2-2 at one point.

Cath Eade’s outfit have a chance to get their first win on the board this Saturday when they travel to face Batley’s first team.

Players player went to Epworth duo Sarah Peach and Fiona Chester.

Umpires player was Esther Latham.
