Grassroots: Rugby youngsters bounce back with win over Moortown

With players unavailable, the under-14s could only field three substitutes for their match as player rotation was paramount in keeping the side fresh to battle against a strong Moortown outfit.

Joel Gunn was also brought in for Doncaster, recording his first game for the home team.

From the kick off, the Vulcans pressured a number of errors from Moortown.

However, it was a handling error by Doncaster which gave Moortown a scrum in their own half.

James Gothard won the ball, drove forward and further team-work saw the side record their first try of the game.

Joe Barnes went close with his conversion as the score remained 5-0 to the hosts.

Shortly afterwards, Moortown thought they had hit back in fine fashion, however, their score was chalked off for a double movement.

The restart saw the home side applying further pressure in a bid to extend their lead with some strong forward play opening up more opportunities for the backs.

Then, halfway through the second half, a scrum was awarded to Moortown and Gothard won against the head.

The scrum-half moved the ball quickly through to the backs and Ben Rivers was fed in.

He then showed a superb turn of pace, running the full length of the field to score Doncaster’s second try of the game.

A Barnes conversion made the score 12-0.

That proved to be the final action of the game as a strong display of tackling, positioning and forward play earned good praise from the Doncaster side’s coaches.

Awards for ‘Most Tackles’ went to Frazer Eland as Joel Gunn collected the ‘Most Improved’ player gong.

Lewi Littlehale was also rewarded for his tireless display, picking up the ‘Most Valuable Player’.
