When League One clubs including Doncaster Rovers will meet to discuss whether to cancel the season

Doncaster Rovers look set to discover the fate of the 2019/20 season on Friday when League One and League Two clubs hold a decisive conference call.

The 47 clubs across the two divisions will take part in a video call where it is expected they will vote to end the current campaign, which has been on hold for more than nine weeks due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

And the discussion would then turn to how to resolve the season - whether that be to declare the campaign null and void or determine a method to decide final placings.

Though the possibility of playing remaining matches behind closed doors was the initial intention for clubs in the bottom two tiers, it is believed doing so would have a further negative impact upon club finances which have already come under significant strain due to the lack of income.

And there are also serious concerns over player contracts that are due to expire this summer.

With players in the EFL still not permitted to return to training, it would likely be at least a month before the first matches could possibly take place. The EFL declared an intention to complete the remaining fixtures inside a 56 day period - meaning that a resumed campaign could push beyond the end of July, when hundreds of players would be out of contract.

Clubs have shown reluctance to agree to pay players beyond the end of their deals, with an unclear financial picture for the game in the future.

Such matters have ensured the view of the majority of clubs in the two divisions is to cancel the remainder of the season.

Finding a consensus over what should happen next is likely to prove less simple.

The EFL appear determined that promotion and relegation should take place, with two versions of a points per game system suggested to decide final placings.

However, there are calls - including from Rovers boss Darren Moore - that the season should be voided if it cannot be completed on the pitch.

The ultimate decision over promotion and relegation is likely to come only once the intention is declared in the Premier League and Championship.
