Rovers head to Sincil Bank looking to cut the gap on the current League One leaders, who they trail by six points having played two games fewer.

Darren Moore’s side inflicted the only league away defeat on Lincoln so far this season when the two sides met in October.

And Appleton admits the latest meeting is pivotal in the race for the Championship.

“It’s certainly an important one,” he said.

“They’re playing ever so well at the minute, they’re on a fantastic run and they’re a very good side, which they have been for the last three or four seasons, even previous to Darren going in there.

“They’ve got a well-established core of about five or six players that have done really well for them.

“We know it’s going to be a tough task. It’s going to be a very different game to Tuesday [against Northampton]. It’s probably going to be a little bit more expansive between two sides that want to play.

“Darren’s Doncaster side are a bit more slower in their approach and possession play. We’re probably going to be a bit more on the front foot, attack more and get the ball forward into our wide players and strikers.

“It’s going to be a good game, an exciting game and hopefully one we can come out on top in.”

Appleton could hand a return to the side to goalscoring centre half Lewis Montsma who has recovered from Covid-19.
