Cliff Byrne, the Doncaster Rovers assistant, believes the team showed an abundance of composure in their 2-1 EFL Trophy win at home to Huddersfield Town.

Rovers recorded a morale-boosting win over their League One opponents with a first half strike from Ephraim Yeboah and a second half penalty from Joe Ironside. That cancelled out Danny Ward's leveller just after half-time as Rovers made a winning start to this year's competition.

"We're pleased because Huddersfield brought a strong team and it got stronger as the game went on," Byrne told the Free Press.

"We're pleased for Ephraim because he's had to be patient but he's got some real good strengths and attributes. And then Joe made sure that the penalty went in didn't he! Obviously we were disappointed with conceding when we did but the team stayed calm.

"Huddersfield weren't able to build up a head of steam after their goal. We stayed in control.

"It's not easy when you are playing against the quality that Huddersfield have. It's a credit all round to the boys that Ian Lawlor wasn't too busy tonight. But he made positive decisions, such as when to punch and when not to, and when to play it and when not to. There was some good decision-making tonight."

Rovers boss Grant McCann made nine changes to the starting XI that saw off Port Vale three days prior but it was testament to the strength of the squad that the alterations didn't weaken them.

Byrne added: "We were fortunate enough to make changes tonight just to give some of the lads a breather. I think as a staff we believe every single player in the squad can play. I'm pleased for the whole squad this evening because of the level of competition and support in the group breeds good performances which is what we saw this evening."

Defender Tom Nixon once again missed out here after also sitting out the Port Vale game last weekend but Byrne allayed any fears over him, adding: "That was just a precaution. He picked up a knock so we’re just assessing that. It wasn't a risk that was needed to be taken."

Rovers are back on home soil on Saturday, when they welcome early league leaders Gillingham to DN4.
