'We can only work towards the dates given' - Darren Moore on trying to plan for Doncaster Rovers during coronavirus uncertainty

There may be a great deal of uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic but Darren Moore says he has no choice but to plan around Doncaster Rovers returning to action on the first weekend in May.

The EFL and other footballing governing bodies announced on Thursday that the suspension of competitive action would be extended to April 30 at the earliest, from April 3.

Projections of the spread and peak of the virus outbreak in Britain suggest that it is unlikely matches will be played around the time of the new potential point of resumption.

But Moore says the only thing he can base his plans around are the current facts, which state Rovers will travel to Blackpool on May 3.

“None of us could have foreseen this and we’re just being governed by the government and our governing bodies,” the Rovers boss said.

“When those change, we change. We work within the guidelines and that is exactly what we do.

“So until they tell us otherwise, we have April 30 in mind.

“Over the next 24 to 48 hours, I have to sit down with my coaching staff, medical staff, sports science staff and look at what we’re going to do now because we’ve been given a date of April 30.

“So what do the weeks ahead look like under the guidelines we have been given?

“In the next few hours it could change again. Since last Friday it’s changed that many times and we foresee that it will change again.

“We’ve just got to adapt.

“It’s a different challenge, an unbelievable one. But I’ve got a team and staff around me and between us we’ve got enough experience about us in terms of how we should manage the players going forward.”

Rovers returned to training on Thursday and were set to progress with sessions on Friday and Saturday as planned, despite the new announcement.

“That was the plan and if you have them in for a couple of days it helps us get our thinking together,” Moore said.

“That won’t change for the players because we’ve structured that.

“We know that it will change.”
