The latest on Doncaster Rovers' pursuit of loan signings

Richie Wellens says the on-going European Championship will have an impact on when loan signings will arrive at Doncaster Rovers.

Talks have been on-going for several weeks with parent clubs over temporary deals and Rovers are understood to have reached the verbal agreement stage for several players.

But Wellens says the players are unlikely to join up with Rovers until deep into pre-season, as the loaning clubs wish to keep them around to bolster numbers with others away on international duty.

“The problem at the moment is that a lot of these young players at Premier League clubs are really highly thought of and the main players are all at the Euros,” the Rovers boss told the Free Press.

“When the Premier League clubs come back, a lot of these lads will be given game time in the first couple of weeks because all the top players at the Euros will be given a couple of extra weeks off.

“That is why nothing will move quickly in the loan market.

“The Premier League clubs will want to get it signed and dated but ask that for the first few weeks of pre-season the players join in with their first team.

“We’re happy with that. We’ll have our core group and if we drop a few loan players in, I’m happy with that.”

Wellens confirmed last week that one of his loan signings will be a goalkeeper to compete against Louis Jones.

The Rovers boss is determined to avoid making more than five loan signings.
