As the new season goes ever closer, we’ve put together this list of Rovers’ best players in recent years.
Things may be uncertain in DN4, following a catastrophic relegation, but let’s reminisce about the good times – and the players that made them – for now.
It’s worth mentioning this list will be based off performances solely in the past ten years – therefore, Billy Sharp and Richie Wellens both sadly miss out.

5. 7. Sam Johnstone
Arguably one of Rovers' best goalkeepers of all time, Johnstone had almost no weaknesses. Commanding, composed and with the reflexes of a cat, Doncaster's goal hasn't felt quite as safe since his two stellar loan spells ended. Photo: Stu Forster
One of Rovers' most beloved loan players in history, it isn't hard to see why. Kane was a fantastic playmaker with bundles of energy - it's surprising to see him still playing at League One level, given how good he was at such a young age. Photo: LINDSEY PARNABY
Talk about "one man's rubbish is another man's treasure". John Marquis was an unwanted man when he first arrived in Doncaster - after scoring 61 goals in 134 league games and terrifying defenders across the country, he left as one of the most revered talents in the lower leagues. The monolithic Rob Jones was incredibly popular during his stay in Doncaster and it's not difficult to see why. A leader in every sense of the word - without him, the magic of the 12/13 season simply wouldn't have been possible. Photo: Ross Kinnaird
