And a familiar name was on the tip of his tongue.

“I think everyone that has played for Doncaster in the last 20 years will name Copps.

“I’ve known James from a young kid. I played with him at Hartlepool and then he dropped down to come back up.

“Strangely enough, when I first joined Doncaster I remember he was in and out of the team.

“Dave Penney was close to sending him out on loan or he was at least talking about it.

“I remember having a chat with the manager and saying I always feel like he can open teams up and he’ll always have something or create something for the team.

“I think it was something as daft as in the Scunthorpe game where he got sent off in the last minute. Something changed in the manager.

“Dave liked it, him showing that passion and that aggression and he kicked on with him from there.

“As a player, a technical player and the ability he’s got, he’s superb.

“And to still be doing what he’s doing at the moment is absolutely different level.

“It seems that he can go on forever and his understanding of the game and what he’s doing is fantastic.

“He’ll always stand out.”

“When I came in,I played alongside Stephen Roberts at centre half.

“He was a fantastic centre half. I think he had his injury problems and everything but we clicked in my first season going in there.

“He was really top class and I was impressed with him.

“He could have had a good career in the game with what he had.

“You had Paul Green who went on to do great things.

“Brian Stock was a really good footballer. There was Paul Heffernan up front too.

“There was so many talented individuals that you could name. They way they fit into the team at the time too was incredible.”
