That was particularly true during the 2012/13 campaign when he finished top scorer as Rovers won the League One title - with Paynter playing a key role in the dramatic injury time strike from James Coppinger that secured top spot.

“He was one, definitely. An absolute leader. He pulled us through when Dean Saunders left, both on the pitch and off it as well. He said he’d take the team forward and not many would do that. If things weren’t going right, he’d nip it in the bud early. The boys responded to that.”

“He had such an engine going up and down on that left side and was a big, big player for us that season. He’d got that quality too to provide something for the strikers from that side. He was a great player.”

“He was massive. If me and Browny were struggling to unlock a game, he had something different.

“He had loads of energy to pounce on a mistake, he was busy and energetic and always harassing defenders. He’d never give a yard to a defender.

“Both me and Browny, as big centre forwards you want someone like that, doing the work so you can be around the box.”
