Rovers League: Askern Miners clinch Premier Division title
Askern Miners have won the Doncaster Rovers Saturday League Premier Division at the first attempt.
The Askern club dropped out of the Central Midlands League last year and hit the reset button in an attempt to restore their former glories.
A Chris Hancock penalty and Michael Attard goal sealed a 2-0 win at title rivals Rossington Main Reserves and saw Askern crowned champions with two games to spare.
Afterwards the club tweeted: “We are just getting started.”
Third-placed Dearne & District won 5-2 at Epworth Town Colts thanks to goals from Connor Peace (3), George Williams and Blake Davenport, while Danny Brown and Ben Carson replied for Epworth.
GCT Doncaster B, who are level on points with Dearne and have a game in hand, were 4-0 winners at ISG Doncaster courtesy of goals from Hayden Tomlinson, Shaun Mundy, Josh Gelder and Jason Laws.
Armthorpe Welfare Development’s season seems to be petering out somewhat. Since defeating then league leaders Rossington Main Reserves at the beginning of May they have lost their last three games, the latest defeat a 3-2 home loss at the hands of Yorkshire Main.
Max Hatton and Brad McFadden scored for the home side, while Rhys Platter (2) and Tristan Taylor earned all three points for Main.
Ten days ago Maltby Juniors looked certainties for the Division One title and were on course to finish the season with a 100 per cent winning record.
However, two successive defeats, including a 1-0 reverse to rivals St Josephs Worksop, means the title race could still have a twist.
Maltby have now finished their league campaign and can only sit and watch as St Josephs play out their season.
The Worksop side have won ten games on the bounce and should they win their remaining nine fixtures the title would be decided on goal difference.
Second-placed AFC Bentley Development earned a 4-0 home success over Epworth Town Colts Development with goals from Alex Shearer, Jayden Fairclough, Vaz Lindley and Callum Agar.
Sprotbrough Country Club were 4-3 winners against AFC Doncaster Town thanks to a Frankie Evans treble and Jack Roberts goal.
Doncaster Eagles drew 2-2 with Adwick Park Foresters, while bottom side Armthorpe Rovers suffered a 9-0 loss at Tickhill Juniors.
