The centre half became Rovers’ third signing of the summer after his departure from League One rivals Shrewsbury Town.

And he says Richie Wellens’ vision for both the team and him as a player was a major selling point - one he believes can see Rovers compete at the top end of the division next season.

“A big thing that drew me to signing here was the manager - the plans he’s spoken to me about, how ambitious he is and the style of play suits me,” Williams said.

“He thinks I’ve got potential to push on as a player and he thinks the club has as well.

“So with those two things combining, he thinks it’ll be a good mixture.

“He wants hard-working, humble players who want to win and that’s something I want to do.

“Whenever I’ve played against Doncaster it’s always been a tough game.

“Whatever manager they’ve had has always played good football and been at the right end of the table.

“Hopefully with the new manager, with me and whatever players he’s bringing in, we can push for promotion next season.”

Williams was one of Wellens’ first targets after he was appointed Rovers manager last month with talks beginning almost immediately.

And the 22-year-old is delighted to see the move finally confirmed and mark the start of a new challenge personally.

“It’s a nice feeling to get everything sorted,” he said. “I just can’t wait to get playing and show fans what I can do.

“The club showed some interest in me and with the manager coming in and knowing about me, I got in contact and it all came from there.

“I wanted to get the deal signed and now focus on playing my football here.

“It was a big thing for me to go to Shrewsbury, rack up a lot of games and different experiences.

“I enjoyed my time there thoroughly but I was definitely ready for a new challenge and Doncaster was that challenge.”
