Rovers opened Andy Butler’s tenure as manager in the perfect manner with a 2-1 win over promotion rivals Portsmouth.

Goals from Reece James and Fejiri Okenabirhie helped Rovers deservedly end a run of five games without victory before a nervy finish when John Marquis volleyed home in added time.

Rovers made a strong start count when James finished superbly on 12 minutes after latching onto a wonderful through ball from John Bostock.

And they had a good grip on the first half, moving the ball quickly with a great tempo and plenty of aggression.

Portsmouth reset at the break and emerged the stronger for the second half, while struggling for clear cut opportunities.

But Rovers doubled their advantage on 70 minutes when Okenabirhie lashed into the roof of the net from the byline.

It had looked set to be a comfortable finish to the game until ex-Rovers striker Marquis hooked in a volley four minutes into added time.

And it took a stunning last gasp block from James on White who threatened to equalise from close range with the last kick of the game.

What a challenge from Reece James with the final kick of the game.

It looked as though Portsmouth were going to grab the equaliser as they flooded men into the box. The ball rolled precariously across the goal only for James to slide in and prevent the goal.

FOUR minutes

Portsmouth almost had a goal back. Andy Cannon fired a shot from 25 yards which deflected off the back of his team mate Harvey White and dropped narrowly wide.

Taylor Richards sees a shot blocked out after charging forward with the ball. It rolls out to Reece James who lofts it into the middle where Omar Bogle heads it over the bar.

John Marquis fires a tame effort towards the near post but it is easy for Louis Jones

The ball is flashed across the face of the goal with John Marquis sliding in, but he cannot make the connection.

What a finish by the forward!

Scott Robertson had the ball centrally, with Okenabirhie in acres of space on the corner of the box. Okenabirhie pointed where he wanted the pass, collected it, powered to the byline and lashed a shot into the roof of the net from tight angle.

Rovers certainly needed that.

67mins Copps...just Copps

We’ve just witnessed a 40 year old men attempting an overhead kick and not looking out of place.

Jason Lokilo played a ball across the box and James Coppinger went for the overhead kick. His connection was not great

63min Double switch coming

Scott Robertson and Jason Lokilo are both coming on.

Josh Sims is down injured and is coming off. Not what you want to see.
