The lack of a striker raised a few eyebrows before the game and proved massive in the course of the game as Rovers lacked a spark or presence in the final third throughout the night and were up against it once they fell behind early in the second half.

There was plenty of energy across the pitch the cohesion and quality in the opposition half was just not there.

The big worry is the injuries - both those suffered in the run up and the pair on the night.

You don’t want it to be one of those pivotal points in the campaign.

86min Need the magic that has been missing

Rovers have lacked a spark in attack all night and they desperately need to find it heading into these final few minutes

James Coppinger fires well wide from 25 yards.

A lovely one-two between Cameron John and James Coppinger sends the defender racing clear down the left. He slams a low shot, looking for the far corner but sees it curl wide.

Reece James, Doncaster Rovers

James brought down Charlie Kirk on half way as he attempted to break clear but he appears to have injured himself in the process,

He is now limping off and will be replaced by Cameron John.

60min Almost caught the keeper out

James Coppinger went for goal from a long range free kick and almost caught out Dave Richards in the Crewe goal. The keeper ended up fumbling out for a corner.

Josh Sims replaces Madger Gomes for Rovers

Mikael Mandron puts the hosts ahead.

It comes from a mistake from Joe Wright. He attempted to carry the ball out from the back and lost possession. Charlie Kirk slid a pass into the box for Mandron, who brought it under control and rifled into the bottom corner. There were big appeals for offside from Rovers.

Louis Jones produces a brilliant save to tip the ball over as Omar Beckles’ header threatens the top corner.
