‘Operation Promotion’ is about to go into overdrive.
For Doncaster Rovers Belles hope to tap into the feel-good factor created by England’s Lionesses at the Women’s World Cup when they return to action this weekend.
Belles welcome Watford to the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday (6.30pm) knowing victory would strengthen their grip on an automatic promotion place.
Glen Harris’s side currently occupy the second automatic promotion spot and are six points clear of third-placed Yeovil Town.
With the women’s game currently riding on the crest of a wave following England’s bronze medal success in Canada, Belles this week gave away 50 free tickets for their fixture with the Lady Hornets as part of an online initiative aimed at boosting their support.
Belles have also announced that Doncaster Rovers season ticket holders will be admitted free of charge to their three home games this month, which includes FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup clashes with Manchester City and reigning FAWSL1 champions Liverpool.
Former Belles star and England captain Gill Coultard hopes England’s success now rubs off on the domestic game.
She said: “We need all the hype surrounding England to translate into more people going to Women’s Super League matches and supporting the domestic game.”
“We need the legacy to continue and we have to make that happen.”
Sue Smith returns to action for the Belles this weekend following her commentary stint with the BBC in Canada.
