Moorends Stingers Under 13s belied their slow start to the DDJSFL season to dump Scawthorpe Scorpions out of the League Cup.

Stingers, who have won back-to-back promotions, are yet to win in league this term.

But a sensational six-goal spree from Reece Finley saw them thrash their Premier Division rivals 7-2 to reach the next round of the cup.

From the kick-off both sides looked to land the first blow, a fierce battle ensured particularly in midfield.

Scorpions carved the clearer chances and went ahead when Tomax Ward glanced a header past Moorends goalkeeper Tyler Wilkinson.

Finley had already had a sighter before, on 20 minutes, he crashed home an equaliser.

And just seconds later the same player put the home side ahead as they took control of the game,

With a minute of the half remaining, centre half Cameron Denby carried the ball out of defence before weighting a perfect pass into the stride of Finley who raced clear to complete his quickfire hat trick.

Scawthorpe remained a threat on the counter attack but the wind was taken from their sails after the re-start when Archie Taylor’s free-kick from 25 yards out eluded everyone and nestled into the net.

The visitors’ luck had deserted them as they rattled the woodwork with one attempt, before falling further behind.

And it was Finley who rubbed salt in the Scorpions’ wounds by adding another three goals before slotting into the heart of defence alongside Lewis Rickaby for the last five minutes.

Ward netted again late on but it was scant consolation for the visitors.
