Jess Sigsworth scored in Doncaster Rovers Belles’ opening FA WSL Development League match, which ended 3-1 to Liverpool Ladies.
A brace from Claudia Walker and an Ashley Hodson strike won the points for the Reds.
Belles coach Duncan Milligan said: “There’s lots of positives to take away. At this level the result is, I’m not going to say irrelevant because everybody likes winning games, but the performances and the development of the girls are what we’re looking for.
“A 3-1 defeat is probably a bit too harsh, we had chances but that’s probably the motto of the club, we need to score more goals.”
He went on: “The bonus of having this league is that they’ve allowed it so that you can have first team players involved. We have a bulk of players that are under 19, and that’s what this league is pretty much looking at.”
Versatile defender Jemma Purfield, who has been selected for England duty at the end of this month, added: “I think we played well in parts. We needed to score more when we were on top but we can improve on it and go again next week and hopefully get a win.
“I think we need to tighten up on a bit of defending and track runners but we had chances as well where we could have finished.”
Belles next travel to face Everton on Sunday in the FA WSL Development League Cup.
