League leaders Doncaster Belles’ under-15s booked their place in the SHGCL Cup final following a comprehensive 7-1 victory over Barnsley Ladies, writes Nigel Watson.
In a repeat of the last two cup finals and Barnsley’s new-look team finishing the season strongly, a close game was expected at Balby Carr.
However, Doncaster burst out of the blocks as Kirsty Nelthorpe fired in before a quick-fire double came from Libby Watson - with just ten minutes on the clock.
Barnsley rallied as the rest of the half became a physical midfield battle. The blustery conditions made good football difficult for both teams.
In the second half, Doncaster played into the strong wind and still managed to create chances. However, it was Barnsley who scored next - pulling a goal back following a strong run and shot.
Doncaster then went into overdrive as Kelsey Douglas punished their South Yorkshire counterparts with a well-taken hat trick before Watson completed her trio in the last minute.
The Belles now face Wickersley in the final on April 5.
In the meantime, the under-15s - who have not lost in 13 matches this season - face second-placed Sheffield Wednesday at home on Saturday.
