VICKY Exley’s stunning long range free kick was enough to send the Belles through to the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Cup.
Former skipper Exley lashed home from distance midway through the first half to settle a closely fought all Super League tie.
It was both sides’ first competitive fixture of the new summer season - and the result will give John Buckley and his team real belief ahead of the inaugural Super League campaign which kicks off next month.
Fellow Super League sides Birmingham, beaten by Premier League strugglers Barnet, cup holders Everton, who lost to Arsenal, and Lincoln were knocked out on a dramatic afternoon of cup football.
Belles will be joined by Arsenal, Liverpool, Bristol, Sunderland, Barnet, Millwall and West Ham in the hat for the last eight.
Both FA Cup finalists will be England’s representatives in next season’s Champions League, the FA recently announced.
