The borough’s MPs have written to Football Association chairman David Bernstein demanding to know why Doncaster Rovers Belles have been demoted from the top flight.

Belles officials were at Wembley on Monday for an official hearing into the FA’s decision to ‘relegate’ Belles into the new second tier of the FA Women’s Super League, effective from 2014.

The result of the appeal is expected to be announced later this week.

Meanwhile, Belles’ bid to avoid the drop has received support from the borough’s MPs.

Caroline Flint (Don Valley), Ed Miliband (Doncaster North) and Rosie Winterton (Doncaster Central) have written to the FA chief Bernstein asking for an explanation.

Part of the letter reads: “We have received a number of representations regarding the Football Association’s decision in respect of the relegation of Doncaster Belles.

“We would therefore be grateful if you could let us know the background that led to this decision and whether this matter may be given further consideration.”
