Welfare’s second league win of the season lifted them onto seven points from nine games in NCEL Division One.

They are currently searching for a new boss after Mike Carmody resigned last month.

James Arnold and Lee McFadden both netted in the first quarter of the game for Armthorpe.

Shell-shocked Brigg halved the deficit through Alfie Usher after 53 minutes but were reduced to ten men moments before Adam Baskerville restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion.

Reece Newell scored for Brigg to set up a tense finale but Armthorpe held firm for a much-needed three points.

Armthorpe chairman Steve Baskerville, who is part of the club’s temporary management team, said: “I’m delighted with the result against a good Brigg side who had only dropped two points. Before the game I wanted to instil a winning mentality into the squad and asked every player to concentrate on winning their individual battle. If they could succeed in doing that then the quality will follow.

“In the end it was a great performance with every single player stepping up the mantle. I therefore congratulate all the players, especially Connor Trueman and Robbie Watson from the development team who came and performed admirably.

“I also wish to thank everyone involved with the club, the committee, the volunteers and players for sticking together through this difficult interim period before we set on a new manager.”

Armthorpe are scheduled to travel to Campion on Wednesday night.

It is not yet known whether the NCEL will continue during the forthcoming lockdown.
