Rossington Main’s hopes of completing an impressive double over Division One leaders Handsworth were thwarted as the league’s in-form team came from behind to win 2-1 at Oxford Street, WRITES PAUL WEBSTER.
A Jason Stokes goal proved enough to separate the sides in October and there was again very little to choose between them on Saturday.
Handsworth went into the game on the back of a superb run of 11 straight league victories but Rossington rocked the visitors by taking the lead three minutes into the second half.
Willie McGhie was brought down on the edge of the box and up stepped Jonathan Mirfin to curl a fantastic free kick around the wall and just inside the post.
The lead lasted a mere two minutes as Handsworth hit back to quickly level things up when Tom Roebuck fired in at the second attempt.
The visitors stepped up a gear and had Rossington on the back foot with the game almost becoming defence against attack as Main looked to hang on to what they had.
But with just 11 minutes remaining Handsworth grabbed the winner.
Brad Billam was adjudged to have fouled Callum Ward just inside the area, leaving Sam Smith to send Lee Appleby the wrong way from the spot for his 27th goal of the season.
