Local football: Epworth kick off Isle Cup with win

Epworth AFC B came out on top against Owston Ferry as the 2015 Isle of Axholme Cup got underway at Carrside in Epworth on Sunday.

The opening day 5-1 success came largely thanks to a Gary Moment hat trick.

The historic competition that was first contested in the 1918-1919 kicked off with the Group B clash between Epworth and Owston Ferry - who are one of this year’s three entrants to have won the competition in its previous guise.

The game began slowly and the first half passed with neither side able to make a breakthrough.

However, the second half was a complete contrast as Epworth’s Moment helped himself to three goals in an excellent opener for AFC.

His hat trick along with goals from Ewan Sterling and Steven Makings ensured a comfortable second period after a closely fought first 45, and meant Gavin Hill’s strike for Ferry was little more than a consolation.

Group A also got under way this week, with Crowle United hosting Westwoodside and Crowle Keys hosting Duffs Dynamos. Epworth Town are the other team in Group A. AFC Epworth’s first team and Wroot are the other two teams making up Group B, with the competition due to run throughout August.

The final will take place on August 29 between the winners of the two groups.
