LIVE updates as Doncaster Rovers begin pre-season campaign at Armthorpe Welfare

Football is back! Doncaster Rovers preparations for the new season will see them take on local side Armthorpe Welfare this afternoon.

Saturday, 2nd July 2022, 2:40 pm

Sixty-three days after their relegation to League Two was confirmed, Rovers play their first match of what they hope will be a far more successful 2022/23 season.

A mixture of first-team players and the club’s second-year youth scholars will get a run-out today, in part due to several senior players still missing.

The club’s three new arrivals could be handed the chance to impress, as well as a number of trialists.

McSheffrey gives update on trialists

Here’s what he had to say about how today’s auditionees got on - and one or two others currently with the club

They made hard work of it at times but Rovers come away from their first pre-season game with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from new signing George Miller and youth-team striker Jack Goodman.

Keep an eye on the Free Press website over the weekend for reaction.

Jack Goodman converts George Miller’s cross from close range after Rovers survive a scare at the other end.

That should see them over the line after what’s been a surprisingy competitive match.

For context, Armthorpe play in the tenth tier of English football.

Armthorpe applying the pressure

It shouldn’t be as uncomfortable as this for Doncaster. The home side have just seen the ball cleared off the line following a desperate goalmouth scramble.

Moments earlier Louis Jones tipped a header from a corner over the bar after he’d stopped another effort with his feet.

Two big fellas up top for the home side now - and they’re proving a handful.

Owen Scattergood replaces Tom Parkinson. Game has fizzled out somewhat, the constant stream of changes has hindered any momentum.

Faris Khan replaces him.

Decent showing from the trialist. A lot of Doncaster’s best attacking play in the first half came from his side.

Miller comes close again

Almost a copycat scene of the first goal - this time he runs onto the trialist’s delivery but glances his header across goal.

Charlie Petch replaces Bobby Faulkner, who has arguably been Doncaster’s standout player this afternoon.

Rio Griffiths and Ollie Younger are replaced by Alex Fletcher and Jack Goodman.

Miller causing problems

Rovers’ new number nine has got a good turn of pace and an eye for a pass. Decent cameo so far.
