LISTEN: Our sports writer's unique perspective on Sunderland v Doncaster Rovers

The Stadium of Light, even an empty one, ought to be a place that League One sides dread visiting but quite the opposite is true.

Take it from me – a lifelong Sunderland fan – that Doncaster Rovers have every chance of bouncing back from their midweek setback at Fleetwood this weekend.

Granted, they’ll have to be significantly better than they were at Highbury on Tuesday night, on and off the ball. They will also undoubtedly miss the presence of defensive lynchpin Tom Anderson.

And, of course, Sunderland have threats – like 17-goal striker Charlie Wyke and the enigmatic Aiden McGeady.

But the Black Cats are a team that lack dynamism, constantly fail to put games to bed and if you combined the talents of Lee Burge and Remi Matthews you’d struggle to make a decent goalkeeper.

Sunderland have won just four times on home soil this season from 13 attempts in the league.

There’s no killer instinct and they’re vulnerable to a counter attack. Visiting teams are flourishing, not floundering, inside the Stadium of Light’s imposing surroundings.

Rovers must be composed and combative tomorrow but they should certainly not be fearful.
