The Reds have seen a string of bids rejected by Rovers over the past month and once again did not reach Rovers’ valuation for the 24-year-old.

It is understood the latest offer was still significantly lower than the amount Rovers would be looking for if they were to accept. And it is now likely Barnsley will look elsewhere as they look to bolster their midfield.

Whiteman was the subject of a failed bid from Hull City last summer and has since garnered interest from around a dozen clubs over the last 12 months.

But to date, Barnsley are the only club that has lodged an official bid for the midfielder.

Barnsley boss Gerhard Struber confirmed his interest in Whiteman when speaking to the media on Thursday.

"Ben is a very interesting player,” he said.

“He showed me that he can play in a good style in League One.

“He is an interesting player for us and we will see what the next days bring with him."

There is no release clause within Whiteman’s contract that would be triggered once bids reached a specific amount but Rovers have an agreement with their captain to keep him informed of any official interest in him.

A portion of any accepted bid will be due to Sheffield United as part of a sell-on clause the Blades inserted into the deal which took Whiteman to the Keepmoat in January 2018.
