doncaster Rovers Belles’ thriving junior section got their hands on yet more silverware this month - but they were pushed all the way by Carcroft Village Juniors.
Belles’ under 11s had enjoyed two handsome league wins over their League Cup final opponents, scoring 15 goals in the process.
Carcroft pulled out all the stops at the Graham Solley Sports Centre in Sheffield but could not prevent the Belles coming from a goal down to win 3-1 and retain the trophy.
The entertaining contest got off to a flying start when Eve Purdy curled a corner straight into the net to give Carcroft a shock lead after just two minutes.
Belles took ten minutes to level when an excellent cross from the right was met by Abby Watkinson who looped a header past the Carcroft goalkeeper.
Moments later Watkinson pounced to put the favourites ahead when Maddie Leyland’s shot was saved and rebounded straight to her.
And the game was effectively killed off early in the second half when Jodie Shakespeare linked up well with Leoni Price who dispatched a shot low into the bottom corner.
Carcroft displayed plenty of spirit and continued to press, with Darcey Faulkner and Jess Moses both going close, but runaway league leaders Belles held on to lift the trophy.
Belles’ under 12 side also retained the League Cup after a superb 6-2 win against an unbeaten Millmoor Juniors team.
