Ilkeston have revealed this week that they have rejected two bids from Rovers for the 17-year-old.

Ferguson remained tight-lipped on the state of negotiations but hinted Rovers have yet to end their interest in the transfer and that Wheatley himself is also interested.

"We'll just see where the situation takes us," Ferguson said.

"He's keen to come, I know that."

The Rovers boss suggested there was potential for a deal to be done now but it could be something he would return to in the summer.

He said: "It could be either.

"We could sign him now but if it's not the case and he's still keen, we could do it in the summer.

"He's got a lot of potential the kid.

"We obviously know the boy well and he's someone we've tracked for a while."

Rovers assistant boss Gavin Strachan worked with Wheatley when head coach of Ilkeston, prior to his move to the Keepmoat.

A move to Brighton and Hove Albion fell through for Wheatley earlier in the season while Swansea City are also reportedly interested.
