Ian Lawlor's Doncaster Rovers career nearing end as he joins Oldham Athletic on loan

The goalkeeper has agreed a switch to the League Two side for the whole of the 2020/21 season.

His contract at the Keepmoat is due to expire next summer, signalling the end of his time with Rovers barring a major about turn.

Lawlor started the first seven league matches for Rovers last season before losing his place to loanee Seny Dieng, who was an ever-present thereafter. The 25-year-old joined Scunthorpe United on loan for the second half of the season.

Rovers boss Darren Moore favoured the excellent distribution offered by Dieng, who was extremely comfortable ith the ball at his feet.

Moore had previously stated he would offer Lawlor the opportunity to fight for the number one shirt ahead of the coming season, in competition with Louis Jones, before deciding whether to add another goalkeeper to his squad.

Moore also said he would prefer to have three goalkeepers in his squad for security in the event of injury or suspension.

Lawlor had made 85 appearances for Rovers since joining from Manchester City in January 2017 and started all but two matches in the second half of the campaign as Rovers secured promotion to League One.

New Oldham boss Harry Kewell said: “He's the perfect signing for us. He's creating competition, his attitude is perfect and he is going to be a great addition.

"His work ethic throughout his career has been top quality and the way I want to play he's accepted the challenge straight away.

"Personally, it's going to be a good partnership for Ian and Oldham and I'm really looking forward to it as a lot of hard work has gone into getting this deal done this week."
