Striker Okenabirhie was sent off five minutes from half time for an apparent elbow on Gills full back Barry Fuller.

And Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee John - operating at left back in the absence of Reece James through injury - scored two own goals as Gillingham turned the tables with their numbers advantage.

Though Rovers battled well and could easily have earned a draw from the wind-swept fixture, both men posted apologies on Twitter and pledged to right wrongs in the coming days.

“Obviously Saturday wasn’t how I wanted or expected it to go,” John wrote.

“The way the team fought and played with 10 men, it wasn’t the result they deserved so I can only apologise to them.

“I share the same frustrations as you do with the result but also how I played.

“I expect better from myself also.

“Can only put it behind me and make sure that I can put it right in the games to come.

“Thanks to the fan and the support they showed - you were great.

“Onto Saturday’s game to put it right.”

John has been backed to quickly bounce back from the disappointment by boss Darren Moore.

Okenabirhie wrote: “Apologies to the fans and the boys...had no intention to catch him and didn’t think it was a red but will learn from it.”

The forward will miss Rovers’ next three matches, including Saturday’s game against his former club Shrewsbury Town.
