How it happened: Doncaster Rovers thumped by Newport County in League Two

Doncaster Rovers will be hoping to pick up their first three points of the season when they take on Newport County.

Rovers bounced back from their opening day defeat to beat Hull City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday – and now have their eyes set on kickstarting their League Two campaign with three points.

Their opponents also won in midweek when they overcame Charlton Athletic 3-1 after losing 3-0 to Accrington Stanley last weekend.

Newport County v Doncaster Rovers

Newport come close again

Shane McLoughlin puts the ball across the face of goal and it eludes everyone. Bryn Morris came close to connecting at the far post.

Rovers need HT ASAP.

Sotona fires over from the edge of the box

He’s been Doncaster’s liveliest attacker, although they have been very quiet going forward, and attracts sarcastic cheers and applause as he shoots over harmlessly.

Bryn Morris fires wide from inside the box - unmarked - after he meets a cross from Shane McLoughlin. Too easy. He should score.

He heads straight at Nick Townsend after meeting Luke Molyneux’s corner. Decent connection, just a bit far out.

Instant impact for Anderson

He’s booked for bringing down Harry Charsley. Absolute nightmare first half for Rovers.

George Broadbent booked

Daft challenge and one that was just full of frustration.

Wow - double change

Tom Anderson and Joe Ironside replace wing-backs Owen Bailey and James Maxwell.

Sotona gets a warning

A bit naive from the winger, he allows himself to get wound up by Shane McLoughlin and squares up to him.

First effort on target for Doncaster

Luke Molyneux’s free-kick is plucked off the goal line by Nick Townsend before the offside flag is raised against a Doncaster player following it up.

Own goal given to Richard Wood

Think it was his teammate, possibly Olowu, who tried to clear and the ball hit Wood and cannoned in.

It’s been coming. Set-piece isn’t cleared and ends up hitting a Doncaster player and going in. Woeful.

It should be 3-0. Ball just misses Will Evans by milimetres after Rovers give the ball away on the edge of their box, allowing a Newport player to whip a cross across the six-yard box.

Rovers give the ball away...AGAIN

Newport just keep coming. Really poor stuff from Doncaster, they are on the ropes and need to get some control back before they concede again. Home crowd loving this.

Will Evans turns home from close range after Ian Lawlor stopped an initial effort with his legs and the rebound fell to the Newport player. A poor bit of goalkeeping.

Blimey, it should be 2-0

Richard Wood gives the ball away inside his own half and Scot Bennett drives with the ball from the halfway line and plays in Seb Palmer-Houlden through on goal but he fires wide.

Deji Sotona then carries the ball straight up the other end and fires wide after a good run.

Joseph Olowu loses the ball inside the box, he wants a foul but the ref is having none of it and Seb Palmer-Houlden fires the ball past Ian Lawlor.

Molyneux flashes a cross across goal

Good play down the left from him and James Maxwell. Unlucky not to see anyone on the end of that delivery.

Lawlor punches clear

Gets some good distance on it after the ball it put back into the box following a corner.
