Gunness had appeared unbeatable at times this season, as they currently boast a 100 per cent record in Division One, and firmly had their eyes set on other silverware.

However, the County Cup proved a bridge too far as they fell to a narrow defeat to the Peterborough and District Premier Division side.

Ironstone’s divisional rivals Fender BCS - who also have a 100 per cent league record - also missed out on the final, having lost their semi-final clash 5-4 against Thurlby United.

Ironstone are set to meet Fender in the final of the Scunthorpe and District Sunday League Challenge Cup final as the two sides also look set to battle for the destination of the league title.

Gunness beat Fender 2-1 in the Dave Ward Cup semi final last month as they remain in contention for three titles. They will face Messingham Juniors in the final.
