Edlington Royals Ladies top the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s County Football League First Division following an opening win over Barnsley’s Shaw Lane Aquaforce.
Last season’s Division Two champions dominated their away trip against their South Yorkshire rivals, winning 3-1.
Royals led at the interval 2-0 with goals from debutant Zoe Unthank and the outstanding Emma Spencer.
The second half began much like the first, with Edlington’s frontline guilty of mis-firing.
Shaw Lane punished the Royals’ wayward finishing when a stunning free-kick cannoned back off the bar and Aquaforce’s centre forward tapped in the rebound for 2-1.
A change in attacking personnel saw Edlington continue to press but chances still went begging.
However, with 10 minutes to spare, Spencer showed great skill to seal the win with a tidy finish for 3-1.
Edlington travel to face Chesterfield on Sunday.
