EFL preparing to make ‘difficult decisions’ over suspension of football due to coronavirus

The three parties met on Friday to discuss the latest situation for the game as the suspension of competitive action continues.

And, in a statement released following the meeting, the EFL said all agreed that ‘difficult decisions’ will need to be taken to protect clubs, players and competitions.

The statement read: “The Premier League, EFL and PFA agreed that difficult decisions will have to be taken in order to mitigate the economic impact of the current suspension of professional football in England and agreed to work together to arrive at shared solutions.

“The leagues will not recommence until April 30 at the earliest. They will only do so when it is safe and conditions allow.

“Further meetings will take place next week with a view to formulating a joint plan to deal with the difficult circumstances facing the leagues, their clubs, players, staff and fans.”

The financial implications of the shutdown are understood to be of the greatest concern for the organisations.

Both the EFL and the Premier League have stated previously their desire to see the 2019/20 completed, ideally ahead of a June 30 deadline.

The Football Association moved to void all competitions below the National League North/South this week, as well as tier three down in the women’s game.
