Viking power

THE Viking Supporters Co-operative launched in 2001 in a blaze of glory - helping cash-strapped Doncaster Rovers rise from the Ashes.

Since its formation the VSC has donated approximately £150,000 to Rovers through the purchase of shares and the sponsorship of players.

Chairman Gareth Thomas told the Free Press this week that it has not all been plain sailing since VSC stalwart Andy Liney stepped down in 2007.

But with more than 1,200 members now signed up to the popular VSC Viking Chat website, the future looks bright.

Over the last 18 months, the VSC has proudly:

n launched a brand new website which proved so popular it had over one million hits in a year

n created a VSC car park at Lakeside to raise funds and provide safe secure parking on match days

n persuaded Rovers to adopt a payment-by-instalments plan to make the purchase of season tickets easier for fans during the economic recession

n managed fundraising events like the ‘Sharpshooter fund’ to help DRFC buy their first ever million pound player, Billy Sharp (pictured above)

n sponsored Rovers players, the Inca Trek and Doncaster Rovers Belles

n held regular meetings with John Ryan to bring key issues to light

n distributed thousands of leaflets to promote games and Rovers events

n created a new VSC management team to develop membership and marketing strategies, and work with Supporters Direct

n started up a new email newsletter to keep members up to date with VSC developments
