Doncaster Rovers have signed Romanian defender Gabriel Tamas until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old has agreed a short term contract at Doncaster after training at Cantley Park this week.

He is likely to make his debut at right back against Wigan tomorrow, pending international clearance.

Paul Dickov sought a seal of approval from Roy Hogdson during his pursuit of Tamas, who played under the England boss at West Bromwich Albion.

Tamas also played alongside fellow new arrival Abdoulaye Meite at the Hawthorns.

The former Dinamo Buchurest, Spartak Moscow, Celta Vigo, Auxerre and Galatasasary defender was without a club after leaving FC Cluj.

Dickov said: “He’s a top player, he played for West Brom in the Premier League last year and he can play at centre half or right back.

“I’ve spoken to lots of people about him, including Steve Clarke and Roy Hodgson.

“He’s had a couple of mishaps over the last couple of years but the reports we’ve had back is if you can sign him, take him.

“He’s not played for a while but he is super fit. He loves defending and he’s comfortable on the ball.”
