Show everyone that was a one-off: Fergie

Darren Ferguson has called on his Rovers side to prove Saturday’s poor showing was ‘just a blip’ when they travel to Oldham Athletic on Monday.

Rovers turned in a largely flat performance on Saturday as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat to near-neighbours Scunthorpe United, ending a five match unbeaten run.

Despite the quick turnaround, Ferguson wants his side to reach levels more akin to recent performances when they arrive at Boundary Park.

“The performance is something we’ve got to get better at,” he told The Star.

“But, on saying that, we’ve not had many like that, especially at home.

“We’ve just got to make sure it’s a bit of a blip.”

Monday’s hosts Oldham saw their Boxing Day trip to Blackpool postponed due to the horrendous rains in the North West.

Ferguson is expecting a tough test from David Dunne’s side, particularly if the elements play a part.

He said: “It’s a hard place to go, especially if that wind gets up there.

“They play different formations with a back four, 4-4-2, 4-1-4-1.

“They’ve got good experience and good midfield players. That’s an area we’re going to have to handle because they’ve got good players in there.”

The Rovers boss insists they cannot allow for any excuse that they played on Saturday while Oldham were out of action.

He said: “There is going to be no excuses that we played and they didn’t.

“We’re professional people and we’ve just got to make sure we put in a better performance and we will. I’m sure of that.

“I won’t be changing anything because of a result. The plan for training will stay the same.”

Ferguson admitted he may have to leave Nathan Tyson out of his starting XI due to the pressures of two games in three games.

Cameron Stewart will also be assessed due to a back injury.
