Rob Jones thought Rovers were deserved derby day winners despite leaving it late to beat Barnsley.

“I thought we earned it from start to finish,” said Jones after the game.

“I thought the boys were terrific all the way through. Yes, the game started a little bit scrappy and a little bit cagey but it was a local derby.

“I thought we came out in the second half and we had a right go. The passion was there, the desire was there, and the willingness to run the extra yard was there.

“Everything from that second half in midweek [against Swindon] came to the fore.

“I’m delighted for them. They’ve listened and learned and taken in what I wanted them to do.

“Yes, there are still things to improve on – I’m a perfectionist. But today, to a man, they were fantastic. We kept going all the way to the end and we got our rewards. We were the better side.”

Jones was also keen to praise the role that his three substitutes played in the win.

Jones said: “Copps was ill all last night and this morning but Coppinger being Coppinger he puts his hand up and says he wants to play. He just ran out of gas.

“Harry Middleton came on and I thought he was terrific.

“James Horsfield has played two games in four days and ran out of gas. Taylor-Sinclair came on and we brought Evina onto the right to nullify Harris’s pace, which he did. Sinclair did really well.

“And then Liam Mandeville came on for Dany [N’Guessan] who ran out of gas too. I’ve had to make three subs because the players are giving me everything they’ve got. That’s all I ask of them.

“Liam actually makes the goal. His movement takes Nyatanga away and creates that space for Chaplow to score. All three subs came on and made a difference and that’s what I want.”
