PAUL MAYFIELD: Crucial refereeing decisions have cost us dearly

Gabriel Tamas was fouled in the build-up to Ipswich Town's winner, says Rovers fan Paul Mayfield.

As a referee, I know how difficult the job is and I know everyone makes mistakes, but how the foul on Gabriel Tamas in the run-up to Ipswich Town’s winner went unpunished was beyond me.

We were in the stand furthest away and we all saw it. Moments later, the ball was crossed into the box and Luke Chambers scored the winner.

We have been on the end of a few poor refereeing decisions this season. We’ve been denied certain penalties against Bolton and Barnsley, for example, and were then given a spotkick against us at Watford when it was a yard outside the box.

Unfortunately, I think Sam Johnstone - who has been outstanding for us during his loan spell from Manchester United - misjudged the cross for Town’s opener and Daryl Murphy had a simple header.

That was a setback and Rovers did well to level through Chris Brown’s 82nd minute penalty before Chambers’ last-gasp winner.

The fans who travelled for the Great Yarmouth weekender were a credit to the club and our fans gave the lads their full backing at Portman Road.

Onto tonight, a fixture which sees a very difficult task in overcoming promotion-chasing Derby County which will be live on Sky.

They have already sold 2,400 tickets and us 6,300 to date, so a big crowd is expected.

Derby have a great away record and since Steve McClaren has taken over, they have enjoyed a brilliant run so we will need to be firing on all cylinders.

Then, there’s not much of a rest before what is looking like the most important game of the season when we take on Ian Holloway’s Millwall at The Den.

We should have a good following down in the capital - we have five buses already going. Any fans travelling by train are reminded that South Bermondsey station will not be open. There is a rail replacement service from London Bridge if required.

Remember those members of the Supporters Club or VSC can get season tickets at a reduced rate. Call Len on 01302 817347 for more information.
