Paul Dickov: We must look after ourselves

Doncaster Rovers must take care of their own business before relying on favours elsewhere, Paul Dickov has proclaimed.

Dickov has had people in his ear this week, only too eager to pass on midweek results involving Saturday’s opponents Yeovil and fellow strugglers Barnsley.

But Rovers’ boss says he’s not interested in other team’s fortunes; Doncaster’s destiny is very much in their own hands, he says.

“I don’t really look at the league table that much, believe it or not,” said Dickov.

“What we’ve got to do is concentrate on ourselves.

“A lot of people within the club and outside the club are talking about other games and other results.

“But that doesn’t affect me. There’s no point in other teams not picking up points if we’re not.

“We’ve got to do our job first and get the points on board, which we have been doing recently.

“Our position won’t be affected by what other teams do. Our position and Championship status will be affected by what we do.

“And what we are at the moment is a confident team, with the bit between our teeth.”

Rovers currently total 30 points - 20 short of the so-called magic 50-point mark.

But Dickov is refusing to set his team any targets for the run-in, maintaining his team will survive if they continue to show the spirit they have done in recent weeks.

“I think you’ve got to be really careful when you set targets,” said Dickov.

“If it looks as though you’re not going to meet them, it can knock the stuffing out of the team a little bit. And if you get close to it, you can take your eye off the ball.

“I try not to look at a points target as such.

“What we’ve got is a lot of big games coming up. If we continue the form we’ve shown over the last six games then we won’t be far away from where we want to be.”
