Doncaster Rovers have confirmed the contract of veteran midfielder Richie Wellens has been cancelled by mutual consent.
The 35-year-old has spent the last six weeks on loan at Oldham Athletic, who are understood to be keen on a longer deal.
He leaves Rovers having made 199 appearances over two spells.
Wellens joined Rovers on a free transfer from Oldham in the summer of 2007, helping them win promotion to the Championship during his first season.
Two years later he left for Leicester City, eventually returning to the Keepmoat on a free transfer in August 2013.
He came close to leaving Rovers last August due to a desire to move closer to his Lancashire home but a switch to Wigan Athletic collapsed at the 11th hour.
Wellens went on to make 16 appearances for Rovers this season before returning to Boundary Park on loan in late November.
