Doncaster Rovers will have a '˜real go' in League One next season, according to boss Darren Ferguson.

Ferguson is due to meet the board over the coming weeks to discuss his playing budget and recruitment plans for next term.

And the Scot is hopeful the club will be in a position to push on from the foundations in place.

“There’s no doubt that what we’ve done is progressed over the last couple of seasons,” said Ferguson, whose side host Oxford United on Saturday and Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday.

“We keep looking to progress.

“Depending on where we finish this season, we want to be better next season and have a real go if we can.

“If we can finish in the top ten this season that would be a very successful season.

“I’ve said quite a few times that the biggest budgets are being spent in League One in all the time I’ve been in it, and I’ve been in it quite a lot.

“We’ve managed to cope with that.

“Consolidation is a word that has been used quite a bit this season and I think that was probably going to be the sort of season it would be.”

Ferguson was critical of his team’s discipline and concentration in Tuesday’s 3-3 draw with relegated Bury and admitted the result ended any faint hopes of gatecrashing this season’s play-offs.

“Absolutely,” he said afterwards. “It’s not going to happen.

“It was a one in a hundred shot really.

“But if you win tonight you’ve still got a chance.

“In my own mind that was what I was thinking, if you keep winning games you can get that momentum.

“But tonight I don’t think we deserved to win the game.”
